Cortana's Letters

It seems that as someone who joined the Halo fandom and lore a few years after Halo: Combat Evolved was released, I'm still missing some parts of the early legends. This is how I see what I have now learned following the new content I've discovered.

In 1999 it seems, Bungie sent out letters (as e-mails) to a prominent member of the Bungie fan community at the time and mass speculation began (similar to what is happening now following the Halo 3 trailer) as to the content and hidden messages inside these e-mails and how they connected to the Marathon series which up to that point was the biggest game by Bungie to feature a lot of mysteries and themes similar to Halo. The messages were sent from 'Cortana@bungie.net'.
As it turns out of course, they weren't connected at all to Marathon but in fact Halo: Combat Evolved as was reveled at the following E3. They also contained in the third letter a reference to the 'I love bees' storyline and of course, Halo 2.
The most shocking thing of all though, as was pointed out to me by a recent IGN XBox Video that went through all the major things noticed about the Halo 3 Teaser Trailer was the mention of a line from the very first of Cortana's letters.

I have walked the edge of the Abyss.
I have governed the unwilling.
I have witnessed countless empires break before me.
I have seen the most courageous soldiers fall away in fear.
[I was there with the Angel at the tomb]

I have seen your future.
And I have learned.

There will be no more Sadness. No more Anger. No more Envy.

Oh, and your poet Eliot had it all wrong: THIS is the way the world ends.

There's a growing worry that Halo3 or some later game will have the master chief, or someone in similar armour, travelling back and detonating Halo before the rise of humanity. Mostly due to this letter, some of the others and the floaty bastard of annoyingness' apparent familiarity with the Chief in the first game.
